When suffering, we go to objective experience to ease the suffering, to find relief and peace and happiness. We begin to realise that the search has failed and we begin to turn to spiritual or religious traditions. There are two approaches. The first, recognising that the mind goes towards objective experience to find relief. The direct path approach gives no attention to suffering. In self-enquiry, the mind embarks on an investigation as to Who Am I, Really? Look inside yourself for the experience that you refer to as ‘I.’ The mind asks the question but the mind cannot answer the question. Each of us knows I Am. Awareness is aware of itself. The essential nature of mind is pure awareness. The separate self/ego is a mixture which is superimposed on our true nature. The separate self is an illusion. We, awareness, are self-luminous.
