If we were to try to find a word that best evoked the nature of being, the nature of our essential self, it would be peace, quiet joy, love. However, our being loses itself in the experience of thinking and seems to be qualified by it. These are the four steps in the understanding: lost in objects, witnessing of objects, witnessing of the witness and resting in being, as being. When we are lost in the objective content of experience, we are doing something all day. When we witness it, we are still doing something but much less than before. Witnessing the witness requires even less effort. Then there is the last step, which is an endless step. Being loses those qualities that it seems to have derived from experience and, as it does so, it loses its apparent limitations.
