Just as eyes cannot see themselves because they are too close to themselves, our true nature of being effortlessly aware cannot be known as an object because we are that. While thoughts, feelings, and perceptions come and go as activities we sometimes engage in, being effortlessly aware remains our constant, natural condition. Like a screen that stays unchanged whether a movie plays or not, awareness persists untouched by whatever appears within it. Rather than requiring practice or representing some exotic spiritual attainment, this simple recognition involves nothing more than noticing what we already and always are. When we cease trying to find or reach for ourselves and instead relax back into our natural state, we discover that the peace, joy and love we seek are already present in the simple fact of being effortlessly aware.
