Rupert and Tim discuss fundamental questions about existence: What is this that we’re experiencing? What is the nature of this moment? And, finally, the only one that really matters: How do we best lead our lives in accordance with our understanding?
Tim Freke has written many books and is a frequent speaker on the non-dual circuit. He says that he has experienced a recent shift, or evolution, in the way he sees and understands reality; he finds himself unpicking his assumptions and feels he has moved a step beyond the view he had held for decades.
Tim describes his journey now as from unconscious oneness, through conscious individuality, to conscious oneness. He sees the individual as the foundation from which consciousness arises. Whereas Rupert maintains that, logically and experientially, nothing can precede awareness, and that the individual mind is by nature limited and, accordingly, cannot perceive the whole. Only the universal, or conscious awareness, can know its own being.
In exploring each other’s understanding of what is essential to us as humans, Tim and Rupert uncover areas of divergence, and they discuss these both in terms of language and what lies beneath the formulations. They end up agreeing that it is more important to focus on what brings them, and all of us, together – what we share, and what leads us to a sane, intelligent and loving life.
Neither of them shies away from using the word God when talking about a single, indivisible and infinite reality, or being, whose nature is love. On this they agree wholeheartedly.
