Rupert Spira Podcast: Simon Mundie

Rupert Spira Podcast: Simon Mundie
Simon Mundie and Rupert Spira discuss the nature of awareness, and how it can be explored and expressed.

At the beginning of their conversation, Rupert Spira tells former sports journalist Simon Mundie that he’s looking forward to being out of his comfort zone and to being asked questions he hasn’t heard before.

Simon, whose podcast series is called Don't Tell Me The Score, approaches the non-dual understanding from a different perspective and remarks that he is delighted to be having a different kind of dialogue from those his listeners will be familiar with.

Both are big tennis fans. Simon describes himself as a ‘tennis nerd of the highest order’ and says that tennis is the only sport he doesn’t have to watch live. They agree that the balletic grace of Roger Federer is evidence of his artistry.

In response to Simon’s inquiry into why we love watching these great players so much, Rupert offers  that their inspiration, born from dedication and intense training, enables them to produce shots of unimaginable brilliance, which in turn allows the spectator to experience a taste of freedom.

In the process of displaying their skill at such a high level, they access a greater dimension of being, a realm beyond ordinary intelligence. Since we all long to break through the limitations of our minds, when we witness great artists and athletes, we bring this experience into our own lives.

They are, of course, ordinary people as well, and the best of them remain humble, managing to resist the pitfalls of fame and adulation. But they also have this ability that we recognise and wish for without realising it is available to us all.

The conversation continues to explore what is happening in these moments – sometimes described as ‘being in the zone’ – and how it might be possible to access our true nature of peace, love and happiness through a process of questioning and understanding.

If we would only relax our focus of attention away from what lies beneath the content of our experience, we would discover the very thing we’re all looking for but can never find because we’re looking in the wrong place.
