Writing the song was an enthusiastic proclamation of our shared nature as love itself, and Rupert and I discuss the meaning behind the words and feeling in the song.
The story begins when a relationship of mine had ended, and I fell into the deepest depression of my life. Upon the recommendation of a friend I stumbled upon Rupert’s videos, and after only 12 minutes of hearing him speak, the foundations of my understanding of myself were shaken to the core, and my state of pain was dealt a fatal blow.
Over the next two years of dedicated study, Rupert pulled apart one myth after another that had led me into my state of suffering, and we reflect on many of those in our dialogue. We go straight to the heart of the big questions: Is death an illusion? Does time exist? What is the nature of reality? Isn’t everything that can be said a step away from truth?
Rupert even attempts to distil 3000 years of spiritual understanding into a single sentence: “peace and happiness are the nature of our being, and we share our being with everyone and everything.”
After reviewing hundreds of hours of his lectures to source the sound bites in the song, I share some of my favourite moments from his teaching. Starting with his book “I Am” we speak of the power that poetry and art have to be more direct mediums for transmitting the taste of truth–and why they were favoured by Rumi and Picasso.
We look at the increasing convergence of science and spirituality. Quoting from his lecture series “Transparent Body, Luminous World,” I ask Rupert for his thoughts on what he considers to be the most interesting question of science, namely: ‘not how did consciousness emerge from matter, but how did matter emerge from consciousness.’ Rupert shares his best working conclusion after 45 years of studying these questions.
And finally we speak about the application of the non-dual understanding in the world, what does right action look like? How does one live the teaching?
We end with just one sentence to summarize everything we shared: “I am the love with which I am loved”.
