Is the sacred, holy part of the spiritual journey necessary?

Hello Rupert,

I have been wondering: Is the sacred, holy part necessary, once one knows what is? I mean, all that talk and worshipping of God, rituals, etc.? In my view it is pure nonsense. Isn’t it? Or must that all be considered part of the dream? Hope you understand what I mean.

Greetings,
Rudi

Dear Rudi,

Yes, if we believe and feel ourselves to be separate entities it is inevitable that most of our thoughts, feelings, activities and relationships will be orientated towards finding peace, love and happiness in the realm of objects. As such, we will seek some objects and resist or reject others. From this point of view the division of experience into the sacred and the non-sacred is inevitable and unavoidable.

In other words, from that point of view, which is in fact an imaginary point of view, it makes sense. However, from the point of view of awareness, which is the only real point of view, there is no such division of experience.

From this point of view (which is not in fact a point of view) everything is sacred. However, as there is nothing that is not that, there is no need to have a word such as ‘sacred’ to define experience. The word ‘sacred’ only means something in reference to its opposite.

Without the non-sacred, the sacred cannot stand. Pure experience alone remains. Love is another name for that. So is ‘I’.

With love,
Rupert
