Notice that experience is always one thing. ‘I am’ is in the same relationship to the content of experience as a screen is to a movie. Watching a movie, we feel we are experiencing one thing but describe it in terms of two things – the image and the screen. It's the same with the ‘I am’, which is the constant background of all changing experience. Everybody has the sense of being myself, but we have allowed our self to be coloured by experience. Before it is qualified, the ‘I am’ is transparent and empty. Allow being to come to the foreground and allow experience to recede into the background. Being is not only the common factor that underlies all our internal experience, it is the common factor that underlies everything we perceive in the world. Wherever we look, there is the one.
