Ask yourself: Am I having the experience of being? The experience of being is the simplest, most intimate experience there is. We are always having the experience of being, but we normally overlook it because we are exclusively fascinated with the content of experience. With this question, we relax our attention from the content and come back to being. As a concession to the mind, which is exclusively involved with content, some effort may first be necessary to extricate it from content and come back to simply being. Once done, however, no more effort is required. Awareness’s knowledge of itself is the only experience not in subject–object relationship. The awareness of being is simply, awareness’s self-awareness. Our being both underlies and is everything. Here we start with being. We make our home in being, as being, and remain as that both in formal periods of meditation or prayer and also amidst experience.
