If all experience is subject to thought and perception, we could never know reality. A thought experiment reveals that the natural condition of the newborn’s aware being before thought and sense perception arise is essentially the same as natural condition of someone on their deathbed as thought and sense perception leave them. None of your experiences, whether pleasant or unpleasant, have conditioned your being. It remains pristine, untarnished, unmodified. In prayer or meditation, we cease being fascinated with experiences. We don’t try to eliminate them; we just stop being interested. We allow awareness to emerge from the background. We simply abide in that, as that – what we eternally are. Enlightenment is not an exotic experience; it’s the recognition of our essential self before it’s conditioned by experience. Always available, irrespective of experience. When we return to our being, we step out of time, standing naked, free, at peace, in eternity. We are that now.
