In the highest form of meditation or prayer, there is no object and no subject. In this absence of any movement of the attention outwards towards an object or inwards towards the self, the source of attention, what remains of meditation? Simply openness. This openness is our natural condition. It does not require an activity of the mind, nor the cessation of the activity of the mind. It has nothing to do with what is, or is not, taking place in the mind. In this openness, there is no past or future, because any experience of the past or future requires the directing of our attention towards an object. In the absence of any directing of the attention towards an object, there is no experience of a past or a future. Feel that what you essentially are is only this openness.
