This meditation explores the nature of reality and self-knowledge. Our direct knowledge of our self is the only knowledge that is not mediated through sense perception, making self-knowledge the ultimate science. An experiential investigation into the nature of our self reveals that the awareness of being is the background, and the reality, of all experience. Rupert uses the analogy of the sun to explain that being always shines with the same brilliance and is not dimmed by experience. However, it may seem to be obscured when the mind turns away from true nature towards the content of experience. When we ask, ‘What is the nature of my being before it is coloured or qualified by experience?’, we draw our attention to our self and taste the nature of being.
