Most of us believe we are essentially a person, and we spend much of our lives seeking fulfilment in objective experience. When this search fails us sufficiently, we may refine our search for happiness and rebrand, ‘the search for enlightenment’. But this takes us in the same direction, albeit in a more refined way. Everybody feels ‘I am’, but not everybody knows the nature of their being clearly. Being aware is not a special experience that some have and others don’t. Everybody, without exception, has the experience of being in equal measure. Our being does not need enlightening. It was never endarkened by experience in the first place. It is always shining quietly but brightly behind and in the midst of all experience. So-called meditation is the laying bare of naked being; so-called enlightenment is the laying bare of the nature of naked being. Meditation is the perfection of the art of laziness.
