What allows us to say ‘I know that I am’ or ‘I am aware that I am’ is just the shining of being amidst experience. If thoughts and sense perceptions are like necklace beads, our being is the golden thread stringing them. As with the necklace beads, there are gaps between the beads of experience through which being shines brightly through. Our current experience of being, that which we had as a newborn and will have on our deathbed is the same, always shining quietly and brightly. In its own experience of itself, being is pure peace. Boredom, restlessness or agitation is the mind’s old habit of seeking happiness in objects or enlightenment in practices, which is destined for disappointment. This disappointment can lead to despair or understanding, a surrender of the great search that brings about a revelation that our being is already and always that for which we were previously in search.
