In this meditation, we contemplate the longing of the heart as an invitation to return. When we look inside, we often find an emptiness and an impulse to seek. One of the most difficult things for one on the path of love or devotion is to recognize that by maintaining the object of our devotion, we are maintaining our self as a separate subject of experience. In true devotion, we do not go towards that for which we long but sink into it on the vertical dimension of being, not on the horizontal dimension of becoming. As we sink into being, we are divested of the qualities derived from the content of experience and stand revealed as utterly intimate, yet impersonal, infinite being, God's being.
