Imagine you are a newborn – you have no experience of a body, of being a person, or of a world. There is just being and you are that. Eventually, being gives itself the name ‘I’ and identifies with various experiences. Fast forward eighty years to your deathbed – your eyes are closed, you have lost all memory and have no knowledge of a body, no memory of the world. You don’t even know you are you. There is just being and you are that. Our whole life is a movement from being to being, which is no movement at all. We were not born, or grow old and die. There is the recognition, ‘I never went anywhere’. The first form of being is love. When we slip out of the world and return to eternity, love folds itself back up again and falls asleep in being.
