In everyday life, in the waking state, we are aware of being. It is from the awareness of being, that our sense of ourself is derived. In the waking and dreaming states it is, at least partially, obscured. In deep sleep, the awareness of simply being shines by itself – being and shining – unknown to the mind because the mind is not present there. The three states of waking, dreaming and deep sleep are only such from the point of view of the person or the separate self that we seem to be. Day and night are for the earth, not for the sun. The three states are for the mind, not for awareness. If non-meditation could be considered falling asleep whilst remaining awake, everyday life could be considered being awake whilst remaining asleep. Sleep without sleeping. Wake up without waking.
