Divested of before and after, we stand empty and free in the eternal now. ‘I’ is the mantra, the divine name, the beacon shining in the midst of all experience. Sound it once and allow yourself to be drawn into its referent. Self-emptying is the highest form of devotion, the practice of the presence of God. If there is any irritation, we have left the now to follow thought into the before or after. Therein lies our sorrow. Make the now your refuge, the place of peace. As Meister Eckhart said, ‘Everything is meant to be lost that the soul may stand in unhampered nothingness’. ‘Nothingness’, from the point of view of the mind. For ‘I’, it is the fullness in which everything lives and moves and from which everything borrows its existence. Our longing for happiness is our love of being calling us back into itself. This gravitational pull is grace.
