We have been conditioned to believe that happiness is to be found by avoiding uncomfortable feelings. But it is the very opposite: the peace that we seek is concealed at the very heart of experience. It is our rejection of these feelings that makes the happiness that lies at their heart seem to be missing. In this contemplation we are guided to bring these feeling closer. We bring them so close that we can no longer stand back from them, name them or find their cause. It is just a nameless intensity of feeling. Like the fairy-tale princess who embraces that which is repulsive to her, we kiss the toad.
