Beneath this personalised 'I' lies the essential, irreducible self. The meditation employs analogies – such as a watercolour by Turner in which a representation of the moon is actually the white paper that the painting appears on – to illustrate that our true being transcends the confines of the body, mind, time and space. It suggests that by sinking deeply into this essential being, we move beyond the limitations of the finite self and into the infinite and eternal.
