All spiritual traditions culminate in recognising that reality is one, and we are that – not as separate selves, but as the indivisible whole. The One’s knowledge of itself is the only true knowledge, for nothing exists outside it to know or be known. Like space that cannot be divided by anything made of space, the One cannot be divided, as there is nothing other than itself. Though the mind attempts to describe it as infinite or empty, these are mere concessions, for even to call it ‘one’ is to say too much. This understanding proceeds through two levels: first, the passing away of all finite things, then the passing away of even that recognition. These teachings themselves are concessions to those who believe they are separate, varying in how far they descend from truth’s mountain to meet us.
