Sound the divine name, ‘I am’, once in your heart, and be drawn deeply into yourself to that which is prior to and independent of the content of experience, the simple fact of being. The mind cannot know what God is because the mind refracts or fragments the unity of God's being and makes it appear in a way that is consistent with its own limitations. For those whose thoughts, feelings, perceptions are so demanding that they take you away from your being, use an aid such the question, ‘What is it that is aware of my experience?’ Another approach is if the content of experience seems to be overwhelming, say, ‘I am thinking’ and emphasise the ‘I am’. Be only being, know only being and love only being. Longing is to the heart what attention is to the mind. It is the directing not of our attention towards an object but the ultimate object towards which we direct our love or longing is God.
