Like a seed unfolding through distinct growth stages, our recognition of true nature develops through phases of deepening understanding. First, we notice our true nature as a neutral background – present, unchanging, illuminating experience without involvement. In time, the quality of peace impresses itself upon us – not a state of mind but inherent like imperturbable empty space. This is ‘the peace that passeth understanding’, independent of experience. Later, we may notice a quality of sufficiency – completeness, fulfilment – needing nothing, seeking nothing. A quiet Christmas joy emanates from inside for no reason, communicating itself effortlessly. As the Sufi teacher Irina Tweedie said, ‘I will infect you with my happiness.’ Eventually, being that seemed enclosed within our body-mind flows outward beyond limitations, expanding to include everyone and everything. This felt sense of shared being is love. Finally, these qualities flow into activities – kindness, compassion, tolerance, generosity – as infinite being expresses itself through us into the world.
