At any moment, we face the essential choice to take our stand as a body-mind and/or collection of thoughts, feelings, sensations, activities etc.; or to understand and feel we are awareness, that which unaffectedly knows and intimately pervades all content of experience. Here’s an experiment: For a week, feel ourself primarily not as a person that has awareness, but rather that we are awareness that has personal experience – pure awareness, with which all experience is known. The open, allowing space in which all experience arises. If you should become upset or irritated in any way, don’t try to change your experience. Just ask yourself: Am I standing as awareness in this moment? If the answer is no, just make the gentle shift from, ‘I am my thoughts, feelings, sensations, and so on, to ‘I am aware of all of these’. See the immediate effect that this small shift has on your experience.
