We have experiences that are pleasant, which we want to hold on to and repeat, and unpleasant experiences that we want to get rid of and avoid. These experiences leave a residue of seeking and resistance which later become the attitudes through which we filter our experience. They are also laid down in the body as tensions and contractions which form the basis of our emotional life. If we find ourself overreacting to a situation, we can be sure that this store of residual feelings has been triggered. When we take this residue deeply into our self, pervading it with the transparency and luminosity of our true nature, layers of accumulated emotional and bodily tension are gradually dissolved. In the Tantric tradition this is called devouring our emotions. Even in the face of a very difficult experience, this openness is always present, always available. It is the ultimate healing.
