Ask yourself, ‘What is the very first thing I can say about myself for certain?’ The fundamental truth is ‘I am’, which points to our being, known to all eight billion of us. We aren’t told ‘I am’; we know it more certainly than anything else. Be aware of being – not as a thought or sensation, but as awareness itself. Being is aware of itself, even if most overlook it, preoccupied with the content of experience. Remembering our being is not the recalling of forgotten past. Rather, we recognise what’s present yet veiled by experience. Abidance as being is the ultimate meditation; not an act but our natural state. Over time, the gravitational pull of being grows, and we feel established in it, in love with our ultimate beloved. Being, ever pristine and at peace, is happiness itself. Recognise that being is never dimmed by experience and needs no enlightenment through practice.
