Ask yourself: what is my primary experience? Without recourse to memory or learning, recognise that being aware, or awareness itself, is fundamental. This awareness isn’t a person’s attribute; awareness experiences itself. Being is effortlessly itself. Do you feel as a person, a bundle of thoughts and sensations, or as pure awareness? Upon waking, do you first identify as a person or as awareness? The ‘I am’ is the presence of awareness, or God’s being, regardless of how it’s clothed in experience. The ‘I am’ is awareness’s own experience of itself, effortless and unqualified. Starting meditation as a separate self necessitates effort; beginning as awareness is natural, effortless. Know and feel yourself as this awareness, the ‘I am’. It’s not a denial of the person but a sanctification, infusing the person with the divine qualities of infinite awareness. This transfigures the person, restoring the sacredness that is the nature of infinite being.
