Paraphrasing, exploring an Eckhart sermon: ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit. A poor person wants nothing, knows nothing, has nothing.’ As long as you have the will to do God’s will, you are not poor. ‘While I yet stood in my first cause, I had no God and was my own cause. I wanted nothing for I was naked being.’ Before differentiating myself into created beings, I stood in the groundless ground before individuation. I had not yet divided myself into me and God. In the absence of a self and God, God had not yet become a creator God. I stood as pure love in the absence of relationship. When I am what I want and want what I am, there is no tension of desire. God is only God when we stand apart from God. But before God differentiates, God is not yet God. Therefore, let us pray to be free of God.
