Clearly distinguish between essential self – the fact of being, being aware – and conditioned self. For most, these are merged. Most people have allowed their being to be qualified by experience. The ‘I am’ has become ‘I am this or that’. We’ve allowed being to be downgraded by experience. Meditation’s essence is to see yourself clearly and be yourself knowingly. Next step: encourage qualities inherent in being to infuse content of experience. Instead of experience downgrading being, being upgrades experience – how you think, feel, act, perceive, relate. It’s like upgrading your operating system. Recognition of true nature doesn’t take place in time, but realignment does. In this approach, purification is a consequence, not prerequisite. The world is the best place to test understanding. The steps: experience merged with identity; discriminate between content and essential identity; recognise awareness as imperturbable peace, causeless joy, shared with all; then endless reintegration of these qualities in life’s every aspect.
