True meditation is effortless and purposeless. Everything we do requires effort and has a reason – to bring change in the future. Meditation interrupts this flow of becoming. If you meditate for a purpose, even enlightenment, you stand as the ego – one who feels lack and seeks completion. Being never wants to meditate, never seeks peace. You are already that for which you long. Enlightenment is an idea created to keep the ego in perpetual becoming. The ego can only exist in becoming; deprived of this, it feels like death. There may be rebellion – meet it with understanding. The object-knowing mind finds being boring, escaping into thinking or sleep. Boredom is like a screensaver over being’s peace – sink beneath it. ‘Be still and wait without hope, for hope would be hope for the wrong thing.’ – Eliot. The great search comes to a natural end, and becoming is outshone by the peace of being.
