Meister Eckhart says the ground of the soul is so still and immovable that nothing can disturb it. Whatever happens in the powers – the faculties of mind – does not reach the ground. Storms may pass through mind and emotions, yet the ground remains silent, just as ocean depths are not disturbed by storms on the surface. There is a place in you not touched by any experience – the silent depths of your being. If you sink into the ocean, you would be divested of restlessness and come to rest in the depths. It’s the same with yourself. If you sink deeply into yourself, you gradually lose the agitation that characterises your thoughts and the sorrow that characterises your feelings. All that remains when divested of experience’s content is being – silent, still, at peace. When the soul is empty of all things, God fills her. This self-revelation is the birth of the Word.
