The Sanctuary of the Heart

Just sink back into the silent ground of being where infinite being – God’s being – shines as your own self. As Meister Eckhart says, ‘when the soul enters this ground, she leaves behind all her powers and rests in the being she shares with God.’ Every night, nature gives us a free sample of this process. When you fall asleep, perceptions leave you first, then sensations, then thoughts, but you haven’t passed from one state to another – you’ve remained as you are. You are always aware of being, but this awareness is eclipsed by awareness of the world, body and mind. In prayer, we reenact this process without falling asleep, being divested of qualities borrowed from experience, standing revealed as infinite being. This ground is the sanctuary of the heart wherein no thought ever entered. The mind can take you to the threshold but cannot enter. The soul stands revealed as God’s being.
