Be aware of any residual impulse to do, find, understand, achieve or acquire something; to meditate. What could meditation add to your being? Only a separate self would desire enlightenment, and there’s no such separate self. Stay in your Caribbean deck chair – that’s the final destination. The mind may ask the purpose of self-resting, but that’s more seeking. In self-resting, the mind is permeated by peace and joy, but this isn’t the purpose – it’s the inevitable consequence. If you find yourself thinking, it’s because underneath is an uncomfortable feeling. Being lies below feelings. Be sensitive to longing – what you’re longing for lives beneath that feeling. We alternate between seeking and temporary fulfilment until we understand peace and joy are the nature of being, only covered by seeking. Complete reorientation: stop seeking fulfilment in activities and relationships; seek it in being, then express it in the world.
