Almost all spiritual approaches start with the presumption of separation and proceed from the separate self that we seem to be to the self that we truly are. In this approach, we start with the self that we truly are – ever-present, unchanging, self-aware being – and understand the apparently separate self as an apparent limitation of ourselves. To start with separation would be like presuming the space in this room was limited. Starting with the self we truly are is like starting with vast space and realising this room seems limited but isn’t. Why start with what we are not? Why not start with what we are? The next step is to recognise the nature of awareness. Only awareness can know itself. The thinking mind would impose limitations. Go to your direct experience and ask: what can I say for certain? ‘I am.’ ‘I am aware.’ ‘I have no shape.’ ‘I am infinite.’
