Being aware is the most fundamental aspect of experience. Everything you are aware of – thoughts, feelings, sensations, perceptions – appears, lasts briefly and vanishes. These are added to you and removed, but you remain. The only element present throughout all changing experience is awareness itself. If awareness were to describe itself, it would simply say ‘I am’. But we allow this pure I am to become mixed with experience – ‘I am a body’, ‘I am sad’ – and this mistaken identity causes all sorrow. Meditation is simply being your self knowingly. You are not only the knower of experience but the space within which it arises and the substance from which it is made. You modulate yourself in all forms yet are never modulated by any. One thing remains to be known: the nature of awareness is happiness. This recognition ends the search. ‘I am awareness and happiness is my nature.’ All you need know.
