Just let your experience be exactly as it is – sounds, sights, sensations, thoughts and feelings. Notice that you are effortlessly aware of the entire content of your experience. The fact of being aware is the most intimate, obvious, familiar experience. You may have overlooked this due to exclusive focus on content of experience. If anything is required, it is just relaxing your attention and going back to being aware. Awareness is what you are at the deepest level – not a function you have, but your primary experience of yourself. It is you, awareness, that has the experience of body, mind and world. The person you seem to be is a mixture of awareness plus thoughts and sensations. Just as John Smith doesn’t become himself when he recognises he’s not King Lear – he was always John Smith – you are always awareness, though you sometimes become entangled in experience. This is recognition.
