When you fall asleep, first perceptions leave and the world vanishes; then sensations leave and the body vanishes; then thoughts and images leave, and naked being remains – aware of being, all alone. Meditation is the same process, except you remain awake. You do not pass from one state to another; you simply take off the layers of experience, and naked self-aware being stands revealed. You do not consider deep sleep boring – you look forward to it because you know it is peaceful. Boredom is a state of mind; peace is the nature of being. Boredom is the absence of experience; peace is the presence of being. Boredom is the blank screensaver; peace is the screen. If you feel boredom in meditation, you are viewing being through the lens of memory, seeing absence rather than presence. Being is not empty or void – it is pure peace. What is emptiness for mind is fullness for being.
