Religious and spiritual traditions encourage us to seek fulfilment within rather than outside ourselves. They offer methods to find inner happiness, replacing the external search for it. This merely extends the conventional pursuit of happiness and must eventually be abandoned. On the Pathless Path, we seek nothing, want nothing, know nothing, are troubled by nothing. The idea of enlightenment as a special event or special knowledge is a misunderstanding. It’s about simply recognising our essential nature now, not through practice or effort. Every night, as thoughts and perceptions leave us, we effortlessly find peace in deep sleep – not a new state but our essential state, divested of experience content. Just as the space in a room doesn’t need to be cleaned, our being doesn’t need purification, silence or enlightenment. Upon waking, as daily activities resume, realise nothing happens to your essential self. You remain as you are. Don’t give your self away.
